If you have never been to Mardi Gras in New Orleans you really need to go and experience it! Whether you go with adults or bring the family it is a wonderful, fun time. The floats are magnificent and the crowds are friendly and hospitable. New Orleans itself is a very unique city. Not only are the natives welcoming, the food fabulous and the atmosphere rich, it is a city steeped in history and tradition. From the French Quarter, Uptown, St. Charles Ave, and beyond to St. Bernard Parish and the North Shore there is history that extends beyond just the architecture and into the essence of what it means to be from New Orleans.

As I sit today and reminiscence about past Mardi Gras memories, I miss the tradition of getting up before 5am, dressing in purple, green and gold, putting on multiple layers of beads, packing up chairs and food for the day (which always consisted of Popeye’s fried chicken and onion rings) and heading out to get the best parade spot ever! The fun part of the day was not just the parades but sharing in the meaningful, mingling with family, friends and the people on the parade route. For that one day no one worried about ethnicity, how they looked, their financial status or sexual orientation. For that one day we were just New Orleanians sharing in what we do best – being one community united in the love for our city and its’ rich traditions.

That is what sets New Orleans a part from the rest of the country. The ability to take diversity and embrace it, instead of exploiting it to destroy it.  New Orleans is a true “melting pot” of many cultures, but it is also a place where “tradition” and “family” are the cornerstones to a wonderful, rich life! Take it from me, a 5 generation New Orleanian.

So I say to you today, “Happy Mardi Gras and Laissez les bons temps rouler!” Which means, “Let the good times roll.”  Love you New Orleans!
